The Hideaway is located at the foot of the Sidlaw Hills, five miles north of the city of Dundee on the east coast of Scotland.

The cottage is located midway between two small Angus villages - Auchterhouse and Tealing. The Angus Glens and the fertile Strathmore valley lie to the north.

The Hideaway is surrounded by wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery.

Your Hosts

Your hosts are the Millar family who farm Balkello and nearby North Balluderon Farms. Ross, Caroline, four year old Finlay and two year old Sophie who live at Balkello Farmhouse and can be contacted should you need anything to make your stay more enjoyable. Bill and Biz live at North Balluderon, the neighbouring hill farm which takes in Craigowl, the highest peak in the Sidlaw Hills range.

The Hideaway is tucked away out of sight on Balkello Farm and due to being at the end of the farm road, has no passing traffic.

Guests are welcome to walk on the farm.

Getting Here

Although close to transport connections, The Hideaway is located in the countryside and so having a car allows guests to explore the local area more easily. However we have had several couples who have arrived by train, escaped the world in the Hideaway and used bikes to get around when need be.

A taxi from Dundee City Centre to the Hideaway costs between £8 and £10 depending on what time of the day it is. If you are going on a night out and want to both enjoy a drink, with prior notice we can drop you in the West End of Dundee, leaving you to take a taxi back to the Hideaway when it suits you.

By plane - there are regular flights from London City and Birmingham airports to Dundee airport. Dundee airport is a twenty-minute drive from The Hideaway. Alternatively, Edinburgh airport, with a wide range of national and international connections can be reached in just over one hour.

By train - Dundee train station is also a twenty-minute drive from The Hideaway. Located on the east coast main line, there are regular services to and from destinations throughout Scotland and England.

By car - from Dundee and the south - heading east towards Aberdeen along the Kingsway ring road which circles Dundee, take the left exit into Strathmartine road at the roundabout after you see Tescos on your right. Drive straight through a little village called Bridgefoot, then keep on this road, up the hill, round the bend and continue on through double corners. Further along this road you will come to a farm road end with a sign for Balkello and The Hideaway. Turn in here. Drive up the road past three cottages and keep going - the Hideaway is straight past the farmhouse on your left, on the other side of the farm buildings.

By car - from Aberdeen and the north east - heading south past Forfar towards Dundee on the A90 dual carriageway, take the turn off to the right for Tealing and Auchterhouse.
